A new generation of ads for the AI era of Search

By Keyword Team·May 20, 2026·7 min read

Google is introducing innovative ad experiences powered by Gemini models to make advertisements more helpful and conversational in Search.
In AI Mode, two new ad types are being tested: Conversational Discovery ads, which create tailored responses to specific user queries, and Highlighted Answers, where relevant ads appear within AI-generated recommendation lists.
Both formats include an independent AI explainer for transparency and are clearly labeled as sponsored.
Beyond AI Mode, two other ad formats are coming soon: AI-powered Shopping ads, which instantly generate custom product explanations for complex purchases, and Business Agent for Leads, which embeds a smart chatbot in ads to provide real-time answers based on advertiser content, turning static forms into interactive lead generation.
Additionally, the Direct Offers pilot is expanding with promotion bundling using AI to create compelling deals, native checkout for faster transactions, and travel partner integration for special offers during trip planning.
These advancements aim to help consumers make faster, more confident decisions while connecting businesses with high-intent audiences.
